BabyCCINO featured in the media

"A landmark Melbourne caffeine trial for premature babies, aptly named BabyCCINO, is set to change NICU treatments across the globe — with an expert saying it’s “one of the best medications” to help them breathe."

We're thrilled to see the BabyCCINO trial featured across news outlets today, Wednesday October 14th, 2026.

Sarah Booth of The Herald Sun writes, "Australia’s coffee capital is set to lead a world-first caffeine trial for premature babies in a development expected to change NICU treatments across the globe.

The life-changing benefits of caffeine for premature babies is well established, but guidance on the best dosage for these vulnerable patients differs between hospitals due to a lack of research comparing amounts. A landmark trial, led by Heidelberg’s Mercy Hospital for Women and Melbourne University, hopes to settle the debate — ensuring our most vulnerable patients receive the best possible dose.

The aptly named BabyCCINO study — short for Caffeine Citrate to Improve Neonatal Outcomes — will start at the Mercy in the coming days and expand to include dozens more hospitals in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom."
